In November 2014, Kuressaare announced an open competition for monument of the famous Baltic German navigator and explorer Fabian Gottlieb von Bellingshausen who was born in Lahhentagge manor in Saaremaa, which received 23 designs.
The winner collecting 1000 Euro stipend was “Fast Ice” by smith Gunnar Vares which sees the monument on Kuressaare Raiekivi spit. The summer of 2020 is planned for realizing the concept.
The winning design is a flat concrete or shale circular shape, with two stone blocks rising from the base which linkage points create a seating area, and a metal disk representing the South Pole is placed in the centre of the shape with Bellingshausen’s discovery marked on it.
