The historical document has the signatures of mayor Hannes Hanso, the chairman of NGO Saaremaa Merekultuuri Selts Rein Sepp, representative of the NGO Merelaevanduse Veteranide Klubi Aleksandr Karaulov and representative of NGO Goverla Leonid Kušnarjov.
Followed by a protocol, a national competition was launched in the autumn of 2014 to find the design for the memorial. Six works were recived to celebrate a world-renowned seafarer and his exploration. The jury considered the most worthwhile idea Fast Ice by Gunnar Vares, a smith from Saaremaa.
The original price of the monument, or rather a memorial ensemble, is 110,000 euros. To collect the necessary amount of money for the construction of the monument, we hope for the help of all organizations, companies and individuals who find it important to recognize great seafarers and their discoveries.
The white and black marble monument-ensemble designed to honor Admiral Bellingshausen, a land explorer from Saaremaa, is scheduled to open in Kuressaare in the summer of 2020 to celebrate the 200th anniversary of the discovery of the last continent of the planet, Antarctica.
Your support for the planned activity is highly appreciated. A separate bank account for the support of Fast Ice monument is opened by NGO Saaremaa Maritime Culture Society in SEB bank account: EE361010220274860228.
